Yes, it is that time of the year again. Flu and cold, sneezing and shivering we find ourselves in in the realm between winter and spring. What better medicine than a hot coffee with rum and whipped cream: Pharisee! Originated on the North Sea island of Nordstrand in the mid-19th century, it was a a sly trick to prevent the preacher from noticing that alcohol was being consumed after the service.
Also, is turns out to be the favorite beverage of our protagonist, Teddy, returning home from his odd jobs at sea. Special, mystical circumstances had led Teddy, after many wanderings, to Paris. And it just so happened that his now almost grown-up children saw him drinking a Pharisees at the bar. They were performing on stage and recalling the stories they’d heard about their father. Unaware that it was actually their father sitting there. After taking different directions, the paths of doomed lovers Teddy and BB converge here. Almost the last song on our new album. Will they find each other again?
Scarlet Mill recorded the song ‘Pharisee’ partly in the harbour of Baltrum, one of the smallest German islands. Inspired by our visit to the Hansa studios, “Pharisee” reflects the atmosphere of 80s alternative synth rock and the yearning for freedom and diversity in Berlin at the time.
